Important surveys closing this week

101 Avenue Streetscape

The 101 Avenue streetscape is looking excellent, with protected bike lanes along most of its length, from 80 St to 50 St. There's a small gap from 84 to 80 St, but our biggest concern is the dangerous design of the intersection with 75 St.

Please take 5-10 minutes to complete the survey if you use (or would use) 101 Ave! The survey closes tonight, Tuesday November 30 at 11:55pm. You can view our full comments on our website.

Snow & Ice Clearing Communications

Have you seen this map of all sidewalk and multi-use trails cleared by the City?

It does not show whether or not any of these paths have actually been cleared, nor is there an official way to know from the City of Edmonton. (You can always ask in the YEGBIKE Facebook group or #yegbike on Twitter, and the community usually answers promptly!)

Have you filed a 311 complaint about these paths not being cleared within the stated timeframe, only to have it closed and marked "No action required", even while the path remains uncleared?

Let the City know they need to communicate better, and provide more information.

Complete the Snow & Ice Clearing survey by Thursday, December 2.

Fall Supplemental Budget Adjustment

Debate continues Wednesday

Community Investment Operating Grant is unfunded

The Community Investment Operating Grant (CIOG) is proposed to be unfunded for 2022.

This grant provides resources to support organizations in the important work of increasing social inclusion and reducing barriers to participation for equitable acces to social, sport, and recreation programs.

It is the only source of regular funding that Bike Edmonton receives from the City of Edmonton.

Please write to your councillor today letting them know you value the organizations and programs that the CIOG program supports, and ask them to fund the CIOG program.

102 Ave: A Place for People

Notice of motion

Thanks to advocacy by Paths for People, Councillor Stevenson stated that in the upcoming December 6 meeting of City Council, she would move the following:

That Administration explore the opportunity to pedestrianize 102 Ave adjacent to Valley Line LRT and return to Urban Planning Committee with options for consideration.

City Council doesn't normally hear from speakers during meetings, but you can write to your councillor before the meeting to let them know this is an important priority for you!

On December 6, Council as a whole will debate and vote on the above motion. If they pass the motion, Administration will prepare a report for later presenation to the Urban Planning Committee. At that time (no sooner than January 18), the public will be able to speak directly to the committee on the report and concept. The committee would then decide (vote) on what to do from there.

The new Urban Planning Committee consists of:

  • Ward sipiwiyiniwak - Councillor Sarah Hamilton (Chair)
  • Ward Dene - Councillor Aaron Paquette (Vice-Chair)
  • Ward tastawiyiniwak - Councillor Karen Principe
  • Ward Métis - Councillor Ashley Salvador

You can always write to any and all councillors, but it's also important to get in touch with your own councillor (include what riding you reside in), even if they aren't on the committee.

We are happy to see that this new council has already begun demonstrating that they listen and are willing to follow through on the commitments they made during the election.

Valley Line LRT construction updates

The Connors Road shared use path has re-opened!

The latest news is that the Tawatinâ Bridge connecting Riverdale and Cloverdale, and the Louise McKinney paths, will be open by December 12. Tawatinâ means "valley" in Cree, and is pronounced dÉ™-WAH-tin-now (in an approximate English respelling).
