Bike Repair 201: Brakes

Bike Repair 201: Brakes

Registration is closed for this event
Well maintained and adjusted brakes make for a safe, efficient bike ride. Whether you're preparing for a winter of riding or tuning up your bike so it's ready to go in the spring, this course offers some essential mechanical training. You'll get hands-on training for adjusting cantilever, v-brake, and disc brakes and a demonstration for bleeding hydraulic brakes.

In this hands-on class we'll review the tools and techniques needed to maintain, overhaul, and adjust brakes. You'll learn to recognize a wide range of potential problems, how to recognize and prevent damage due to poor maintenance, and how to choose replacement parts. You'll get hands-on experience with intermediate preventative maintenance/adjustments, and discover the simple step-by-step approach to making brakes work well. Bring your bike to learn about your own components and see how your bike ticks, or work on one in the shop. For hydraulic brakes, you'll see one demonstration and learn the basic principles for successfully bleeding or topping up hydraulic brake fluid. Please note that this class will cover common cantilever, v-brake, and disc brakes, but not rod or coaster brakes nor replacement of hydraulic hoses.

Pre-requisite: You don't need much mechanical experience to take Bike Edmonton's 200 level classes, but if you haven't worked on bikes before, we recommend that you take our Bike Repair 101: Hands-On Intro to Bike Maintenance class first to learn basics like removing wheels and tires.

Registration is required. These classes tend to fill up, so register early to reserve your spot. Visit http://apps.bikeedmonton.ca for a complete list of current courses.
