President's Report - Jeremy

Financial Report - Chris

  • COVID-19 & Bike Edmonton Report
  • It's more of a revenue problem than an expense problem
    • Optimistic to say we'll have a significant revenue; might be 5% of regular revenue
    • In tight financial times, people might turn to more low-cost bike repair options
    • Drop-off repair may be set up after online bike sales and parts sales (going live next week)
    • Could consider winterizing bicycles in December and spring tune-up in Feb-Mar.
  • We're quite close to missing our busy season; it's fortunate that winter has persisted
  • External Sources of $
    • May be tough to get a loan from a loan, given we are low in assets
    • Could look into Bike Edmonton bonds; funds from the public
    • Subsidizing staff wages until start of June
  • Option in face of existential crisis: closing one shop
    • We can't expect to maintain same revenue with only one shop open (would be less space to store bikes to sell, to have patrons come through)
    • Scenario in the budget would only lead to us staying afloat for an additional 3 months, and it would be harder to bounce back with only one shop
  • Bike Edmonton's Financial History
    • Bike sales and DIY shop tends to be a seasonal business
    • Winter months will always do more poorly than the summer, though we usually come out ahead.
  • Rent & Staffing
    • Bike Edmonton's major expenses
    • Requesting 3 months free rent from landlords
    • May need to consider work-sharing and leaning on EI to get us through the winter
  • We'll revisit this at each board meeting, with discussions in between too.

Program Review Committee - Rachel/Matt/Annya

  • No updates at this time

Human Resources Committee - Jeremy

  • How does the hiring of a Downtown Shop manager factor into our budget?
    • It's budgeted to hire them at 20 hours/week
    • They would qualify for the wage subsidy until the end of May
    • If they're laid off at the end of the wage subsidy period, they would qualify for the CERB. Would work out better financially for all parties.
  • Delayed the interviewing of Downtown Shop Manager with uncertainty surrounding COVID-19
  • Want to minimize number of people coming through the shop; want a dedicated staff member at each shop
  • HR Committee to go ahead and set up interviews with qualified candidates

Current and Completed Business

North Shop Move - All (20 min)

  • Sourced bars from adjacent shop to protect windows
  • Looking at moving everything from old to new space
  • New shop set-up is going well:
    • Specialized tool room
    • Kitchenette
    • Bike room for volunteers
    • Several work stations partially assembled
  • Front Bike Rack
    • Want to ensure that the bike racks we put out front abide by our standards

Board Volunteer Hour Tracking - Jasmine (10 min)

New Business

Schedule a time to meet with your committees - ALL BOARD (10 min)

  • This will be a standing agenda item during board meetings to encourage some momentum in committees
