Traffic shortcutting through Strathcona

Have you had a near-miss? Let us know.

Traffic shortcutting through Strathcona due to the Duggan Bridge closure at 107 St and Saskatchewan Drive is creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians and people on bikes, including on the 106 St bike lane.

If you've witnessed a near-miss or collision, please let us know. Learn more here.

Yellowhead Drive Freeway Conversion

Dangerous design ignores Vision Zero principles

Give your feedback before March 8

We have major concerns about the design of the Yellowhead Drive Freeway Conversion, which ignores Edmonton's Safe Mobility Strategy. Review our blog post about the issues and please complete the survey to share this feedback with the City.

Safe Passing Bylaw

1 metre minimum passing distance

The Alberta Cycling Coalition, Paths for People, and Bike Edmonton all spoke at a recent committee hearing in favour of a proposed safe passing bylaw. The proposed bylaw, which passed both committee and council votes unanimously, is now being developed, and will mirror Calgary's bylaw, which requires automobile drivers to give at least 1m space when passing, and 1.5m of space when passing at speeds above 60 km/h.

Street Labs

Community-led street changes

Launching in March: see changes on your street this summer

Vision Zero Street Labs are launching this spring. If you’ve ever worried about the safety of streets and intersections near your home, but long term infrastructure upgrades are a long way off, you can work with your community to have temporary and adaptable measures installed in a matter of weeks rather than years. You can start connecting with your neighbours now, and work with the City to make the changes you want to see in your community. Want some great ideas? Check out these examples of tactical urbanism.

Councillor Andrew Knack has also written about Street Labs on his blog.

You can watch this one-minute introductory video to learn more about the process and hear a few ideas to get started with, and learn more about the City's Safe Mobility Strategy 2021-2025.

Win studded tires at Flying Canoe Volant

Gateway Boulevard Reconstruction and Station Flats

Station Flats feedback open until March 5

No engagement for Gateway Blvd

Paths for People has highlighted missed opportunities in Gateway Boulevard draft concept plan. We would go even farther, and propose a shared use path on the east side of Gateway Boulevard, linking 80 Ave and 81 Ave to the south side of Whyte Ave, as a measure to improve connectivity around the railway.

Gateway Blvd draft concept plan

In the same area, a proposed development called Station Flats proposes to rezone and remove the municipal reserve (green space) on the corner of Gateway and Whyte Ave. Feedback is being accepted until March 5.

While this development is a project of Beljan Development, a developer with a strong history of well-done projects with a focus on walkability (including one of the first developments in Edmonton to include a bike garage in lieu of any on-site parking), we do have reservations about potential impacts on connectivity of the area south of Whyte Ave on either side of the railway, as well as the loss of the green space which, while neglected by the City, nevertheless serves as a gathering space for many members of the community.

You can provide your own feedback here.

Glenn Kubish Pecha Kucha

Missed this year's International Winter Cycling Congress? You can watch Glenn Kubish's Pecha Kucha presentation to see how winter feels to him:

The day I pedaled into the December dark of the MacKinnon Ravine, it was winter 6°C. The dark gets bad press. Without the dark, how would we have astronomy? Without the dark, how would winter bicycle riders ever see a ravine path lined with diamonds and feel like they were riding through a constellation?
Snow Warrior

Watch Snow Warrior for free on March 18! The short film is a love letter to the splendour of winter, following a day in the life of Mariah, an Edmonton bike courier.

Oulu, Finland snowplow livestream

What's it like to operate a snow plow in Oulu, Finland, and keep the bike paths clear? Contractors in Oulu are required to bike the same paths that they clear, and will hand out coffee to passing cyclists and ask them how the paths are! Watch Pekka Tahkola's recorded livestream ride-along during a recent snowfall.
