Which municipal election candidate are you?

Visit our voter guide to see candidate positions on active transportation

Today is the last day to vote in the advance polls for the Edmonton municipal election, with election day this Monday, October 18.

We've compiled candidate views on active transportation and planning into comparison charts for each ward, so you can quickly compare each candidate. Check out our voter guide here. Our guide also includes school board trustee candidates. School boards can heavily influence urban form (e.g. through choosing where to close schools and where to open schools), and there are several candidates who recognize the importance of schools in city-building and encouraging active lifestyles.

Our guide includes responses from the Taproot Edmonton survey (which you can take to see how candidates align with you on a wide variety of important issues), the Paths for People survey on active transportation, candidate platforms, and some social media posts and interviews.

Annual General Meeting

Sunday, November 7, 2021

Virtual meeting. 1-3pm

The Bike Edmonton Annual General Meeting (AGM) will be held Sunday, November 7, 2021, from 1-3pm virtually on Google Meet. To register, please RSVP here. RSVPing is strongly encouraged so that we can verify your membership status and issue your secret ballot for voting.

If you wish to participate but do not have the technical means to participate via Google Meet, please contact us so we can make arrangements for your participation.

Everyone is invited to attend, hear updates about the past year, where we're headed in the future, and vote on important business.

Only members-in-good-standing are eligible to vote: check your membership status (and renew your membership) here. If needed, please renew your membership well prior to the meeting, as we must confirm membership status before e-mailing your electronic ballot. Members in good standing are those who have been members for at least one month. Has your membership recently expired? Don't worry! If your membership has lapsed for no more than six months, you'll still be considered a member in good standing immediately upon renewing. (See our bylaws for the specific definition.)

If you are interested in helping to set the direction of our growing organization, or know someone eager to help build Edmonton as a better city for cycling and walking, please visit our nominations page for details about the roles and responsibilities. Candidates can also be nominated from the floor at the AGM. Directors will be elected by our membership at the AGM.

Safe Passing Bylaw

New rules as of Sept 30

Edmonton's new safe passing bylaw is now in effect, thanks to a supportive council and work from the Alberta Cycling Coalition (including support from Bike Edmonton and Paths for People).

The new bylaw requires that when passing, drivers of automobiles give:

  • 1 meter between the vehicle and the bicycle where the posted speed limit is 60 km/h or less, and
  • 1.5 meters between the vehicle and the bicycle where the posted speed limit is greater than 60 km/h

We expect most of the enforcement of the new bylaw will be focused on education rather than penalization, but the explicit distances also provide additional legal protection to vulnerable road users in terms of assigning fault and liability.
